Shingle help
Use your own domain
Show your site at a domain you already own.
Before you start
You'll need a paid plan, and a domain you already own. See Plans, or choose one in Plan and billing.
You'll also need to change your domain's DNS records. That's usually where you bought the domain, like GoDaddy, Namecheap, Squarespace, Porkbun or Cloudflare.
Connect your domain
Open your site's settings and find Domain. Type your domain, and choose Connect domain.
If you type a root domain like bakery.com, we connect www.bakery.com, which works with every provider. A subdomain like book.bakery.com connects as you type it.
Add the two records
Where you manage your domain's DNS, add both records exactly as your site's settings show them. Copy each name and value rather than typing them.
- A TXT record proves the domain is yours. Its name starts with
_shingle. - A CNAME record sends your visitors to your site. Its name is
www, or your subdomain.
Some providers ask for the whole name, like _shingle.www.bakery.com. Others add your domain to the end themselves: then type only the part before it.
Keep your email records as they are. If your domain already has a record named www, remove it first: a name can have only one CNAME.
Send bakery.com there too
So people who type your domain without www reach your site too, forward bakery.com to https://www.bakery.com in your provider's settings. Most providers call this forwarding or a redirect.
How long it takes
We look for your records by ourselves: soon after you connect your domain, then less often, for seven days. Most domains connect within minutes, and some providers take up to 48 hours. Choose Check now once you've added them.
When we've found both records, we secure your site, which usually takes a few minutes, and your domain says Connected. If your site is live, we publish it again for your domain, which takes about two minutes, and email you when it's done. If it isn't live yet, it goes to your domain when you publish it. See Publish your site.
If it needs attention
If we can't find a record after seven days, your domain says Needs attention, with the record that's missing. Check its name and value, then choose Check again.
If we couldn't put your site on your domain, the card says so. Choose Try again, or we'll try again by ourselves the next day.
If your domain stops pointing to Shingle, it goes back to waiting and says which record to put back. Your site stays at its Shingle address meanwhile.
If we say your domain is connected to another Shingle site, remove it from that site first, or write to us if it isn't yours.
Your Shingle address
Your site keeps its Shingle address, and it keeps working. Search engines are told your domain is your site's address, so it's the one that shows up in results.
Remove your domain
Choose Remove domain in your site's settings. Your site stays at its Shingle address, and your domain stops showing it straight away.
